What Football Coaches Look for in Film
Coaches do not watch highlight film the way families do. They are scanning for reasons to keep watching — and reasons to stop. Here is what actually decides which side you land on.
1. Can they find your athlete in two seconds?
This is the single biggest reason film gets closed early. If a coach has to rewind to figure out which player you are, the evaluation is already over. A pre-snap marker, a title card with the jersey number, and consistent framing solve it instantly.
2. The first three plays carry the whole reel
Most evaluators watch fifteen to thirty seconds before deciding. Lead with your best three plays, not your chronological first three. Saving the best for the end is a habit from family videos, and it costs athletes real looks.
3. Effort plays and technique, not just scores
A pancake block, a backside pursuit tackle, and a clean pass-set are more persuasive than a long touchdown against overmatched competition. Coaches are projecting the athlete forward, so they weigh traits — pad level, hips, hands, first step, finish — over the scoreboard.
- Show the same trait more than once so it reads as repeatable
- Include a rep against strong competition, even if it is not a win
- Do not cut away before the play finishes
- Keep the reel tight; twenty strong plays beat sixty average ones
4. Honest film builds trust
Over-edited reels with heavy effects, music-driven cuts, and clips that hide the outcome make coaches suspicious. Clean, plain, well-labeled film reads as confident. That is the standard we edit to on every order.
